James was Ash's best friend before the Misfile. His family lived two houses down the street[2], and he was the one to teach Ash how to race.

Until he graduated from high school and left for college in California, James held the title of King of the Mountain.[3] After he was gone, the vacated title was disputed by Ash and Tom.
After the Misfile, Ash was excited about James' return from college, only to find out that, as a female, she had lost her virginity to him one night (which Ash cannot remember).[4] James, who is in love with female-Ash, is crushed by her lack of memory, and remains obsessed with Ash for a while.
James drives a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4[1], which is where Ash acquired familiarity with four-wheel drive cars.
